DESIGN

I designed the news page for two years, often creating sidebars to present information. I selected my personal favorites to showcase.

PAGE DESIGN

I have designed the News page of Prospective for two years. While I am an editor for prospectiveonline.com and the print publication is not my division, I did help the editors make several decisions after I attended a design consultation with C. Bruce Watterson at the Gloria Shields All-American Publications Workshop with a first year print editor, Lauren Wilson. At our editor retreat, we discussed using larger drop caps, all-caps headlines and large photos, along with selecting fonts.

I helped choose the headline and subhead fonts.

I love that the staff writers report thoroughly. However, a text heavy page can be difficult to work with. I tried to utilize large images and pull quotes to make the long stories appear less daunting.

To break up text, I introduced adding bold phrases throughout a story. By making certain important phrases bold, the text seemed less intimidating, and could also serve as a way to draw the reader's eye to a story.

The News page was previously printed in black and white.

For the entirety of the 2016-2017 publication year, I kept my design the same. For this issue, however, I wanted something eye catching to draw readers in.

As the writer of Community on Alert, I decided to ask my photographer, Chase Kincaid, to see if we could find someone to stage a photograph. He knew a girl in theatre, and the large image at the top of this design was the outcome.

Web DESIGN

Wanting to revamp Prospective's online publication, I changed the layout and look of the site. I created a new header during summer 2017 but changed it in September.
